    This dataset contains the Underway (UWY) data collected on commercial ferries plying the Rottnest to mainland route. Voyages take place on a commercial schedule. A Seabird SBE38 sensor is permanently mounted on the ferry in the engine cooling waster intake. A monitoring computer records sea surface temperature whenever the vessel achieves more than a minimum preprogrammed speed over ground. Position is determined from a GPS unit. Data is transmitted to CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research centre in Hobart on the hour every hour. The vessel traverses the route from Hillarys Boat harbour to Rottnest 3 or four times per day except during a winter vessel maintenance period. This dataset has been processed and is archived within the CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research Data Centre in Floreat.

    Algal biomass in the Perth region were identified from quadrat surveys , as part of the SRFME research program. The aim of the SRFME Coastal project is to characterize the coastal benthic ecosystems of southwestern WA, with particular focus on benthic reef cosystems, their productivity and dynamics, and the physical, chemical and biological factors driving variability along dominant spatial and temporal scales. To achieve this, we undertook 3-monthly seasonal sampling from 2003 - 2005 at a series of coastal sites situated between Cape Naturaliste in the south and Jurien Bay in the north. Benthic Sampling was integrated with satellite observations of SST, ocean colour and subsurface measurements of other water column properties, as well as sediment biogeochemical sampling. Within this region benthic sampling was nested at Regional (100s km) Local (10s km) and Site (1 km) scales and within each of the regions additional sites were sampled to incorporate site scale variability along cross-shore gradients.

  • This record contains data collected on the RV Melville between 18 and 24 June 2003 in the North West Shelf. The data can be used for Ocean Colour sensor validation. Parameters measured are the concentration of chlorophyll and carotenoid pigments and the absorption coefficient for particulate (ap) and detrital or non-algal (ad) components of the water column. 29 stations were sampled as well as 30 underway locations. The data was used primarily to validate ocean colour sensors MERIS, MODIS and SeaWIFs and the SST sensor AATSR.

    Samples were collected from the locations Two Rocks (Feb 2002 - Dec 2004), Bunbury and Jurien Bay (March 2003 - Feb 2005) and analysed for total suspended matter, absorption coefficients for dissolved and particulate matter and pigment concentration and composition. Microphytobenthos samples were collected at sites where Martin Lourey worked. The Two Rocks data were collected at 5 stations on the Two Rocks transect as used during the SRFME project. The data were collected by two groups; one group sampled 5 stations from A (20 m depth), B, C, D to E (1000 m depth). The second group sampled 5 stations - T2, T3, T4, T5 and T6 where T3 was equivalent to station A and T6 was equivalent to station B. The data were collected to determine the bio-optical charateristics of this region. The data can be used for Ocean Colour sensor validation. Parameters measured are the concentration of chlorophyll and carotenoid pigments, These samples were analysed using the method of Wright et al 1991.
